Okinawa #4

When Okinawa became Japanese in full again, in 1974, it was the economic boom, airlines were growing fast, so as mentioned in a previous post, ANA and JAL picked up great locations and built up hotels on the island, launching the boom of domestic tourism to the islands.

I stayed at the ANA InterContinental on Manza Beach, wonderful location, 31 ha of activities, gardens, swimming pools, a private beach, boats, sailing, it is a unique resort.

Sushi is an art

Everyone knows Japan for sushi, unfortunately, this has become an industry of junk food in most cases around the world and does not do any favour to this wonderful dish if well prepared. I was fortunate to discover a small family run restaurant round the corner of my office just as I landed in Japan. Since then, every time I go, I am inspired.

The parents and their 2 sons run this 13 seats local, very Japan style, a small counter, 2 tables, the father runs around and smiles to customers, mother serves tea and handles oshibori and checks, one of the son is in the back office preparing udon, cleaning plates, the 2nd one is the sushi master.


Every day, they go to the market and choose the fish by themselves. At lunch time, you may take a la carte but they offer very good value for money set lunch with 8 or 10 pieces of sushi, a small bowl of udon and a miso soup. The food is exquisite, the rice is cooked to its point and gently pressed, the fish is delicious, this creates light sushi. All in all, a moment in time, a real break, you find yourself in Japan for one hour, no loud music, no TV, just Japanese nice humble people.

Food in Kanazawa

Kanazawa is known for the cuisine, plenty of fish and plenty of great places for dining. I also found that there is a trendy flair to it with modern bars hidden in traditional houses in the bottom of a tiny street, it is a great foodie place

Everyday life, food and people, are the things I am mostly interested in when visiting a country, of course the history, the monuments and museums are great but a country is defined by his people and society.

When visiting the Kanazawa Omicho market, … look at the size of the oysters!!



Here is the 2nd largest city in Japan. Both Tokyo and Yokohama have grown so big that they are attached now. Door-to-door, it takes me 1h15 to go to Minatomirail where the amusement park is, the large Queen’s mall. It is a nice day out on the seaside, overlooking the Yokohama bay


It is always a unique experience to go to teppanyaki. This week, I was lucky to go again to Akasaka Restaurant, food is exquisite, preparation is a show, it is truly a special moment although very pricey. This can only be done on special occasions

A taste of Ginza

The Ginza area is a hot spot if you want to show off, go shopping and buy luxury goods, a lot of department stores are regrouped there, there is even a metro stop called after one of them (Mitsukoshi mae).

Just like the Boulevard Haussmann in Paris, it took a massive fire at the end of the XIX century for an architect to redesign the area. gradually it became the place to be seen for the Tokyoites until the great earthquake in 1923. The area, guess what, was rebuilt one more time and again regained its fame for nice buildings, high end shopping.

After the war, the reputation came back and nowadays, Ginza is packed with Chinese tourists coming for luxury goods, so much so that restrictions are in place in most shops that the Japanese themselves can get access and stock of those, should they want to buy any.

Nightlife is trendy there, although very expensive. however, if you go down the avenue towards Shimbashi, then, it becomes food paradise, plenty of izakaya, all types of bars and cafes. Ginza Corridor for brasseries, oyster bars, etc.
